They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and water gushed out. Isaiah 48:11
As the season of gratitude begins, we are encouraged everywhere to number our gifts. I love this numbering of blessings.
I love the golden leaves still clinging to trees through grey pouring days. I love the answered prayer of little pj’d feet pitter-pattering down our staircase in the morning. I love cupboards overflowing with food and the energy even to conceive of making pancakes on Sunday mornings. All the good things, all the tangibles, all the smellables, tastables, huggables of life are easy for me to see and easy to say thank You for.
But there are other provisions, some not so easy to see. At the time, maybe you didn’t think of them as provisions because you were too busy holding the ceiling up. But in those days of ceiling-holding, breath-holding, the floor beneath you held firm. Did you notice that? And did you notice that when there were empty cupboards and bank accounts and spirits that somehow enough showed up when you couldn’t hold anymore, you couldn’t breathe anymore?
Enough isn’t sexy, and it’s not always even tasty. I wonder if manna was satisfying: wafer-like, with no shelf life whatsoever. But there was always enough manna for the Hebrews in the wilderness. And somehow, he’s still raining down manna–He’s still raining down enough–on His people.
He is raining down ENOUGH for you today. I challenge you, my friend, to look into your life with enough eyes. See where provision rains down for you to survive, where water flows from rocks and birds fall from skies. And even if it’s not sexy provision, even if it’s not new stuff, praise God that it’s enough.
Thanks starts in the little, in the small, in the enough providing oxygen to breathe, food for today, grace to trust for tomorrow.
God bless you in your thanksgiving for the big and small this week.
